Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Peaceful coexistence is essential for fostering development and harmony in multicultural societies. In Nigeria, where ethnic and religious diversity often leads to tensions, media such as Hausa films have emerged as a medium to promote understanding and tolerance (Abubakar & Musa, 2024). Hausa films, produced in Northern Nigeria, often reflect themes of unity, reconciliation, and mutual respect, resonating deeply with audiences in Zango Local Government Area, Katsina State. By portraying shared values and addressing divisive issues, these films encourage dialogue and foster a sense of community (Garba & Ibrahim, 2023). This study examines the impact of Hausa films in promoting peaceful coexistence in Zango, a region characterized by its diverse demographic composition.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite efforts to promote peace in Zango, tensions arising from ethnic and religious differences persist. While Hausa films hold the potential to bridge divides, their role in fostering peaceful coexistence remains underexplored (Yusuf & Bello, 2023). This study seeks to understand the effectiveness of Hausa films as tools for peacebuilding in the Zango community, addressing the gap in research on their impact.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To identify themes of peaceful coexistence depicted in Hausa films.
  2. To assess the impact of Hausa films on community perceptions of peace in Zango.
  3. To evaluate the challenges faced by filmmakers in producing peace-oriented Hausa films.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What themes of peaceful coexistence are portrayed in Hausa films?
  2. How do Hausa films influence community perceptions of peace in Zango?
  3. What challenges do filmmakers face in producing films that promote peaceful coexistence?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Hausa films prominently feature themes of peaceful coexistence.
  2. Hausa films positively influence community perceptions of peace in Zango.
  3. Challenges such as funding and political pressures affect the production of peace-oriented Hausa films.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of media, particularly Hausa films, as tools for peacebuilding in diverse communities. The findings will provide insights for filmmakers, policymakers, and peacebuilding organizations on leveraging cinema for societal harmony.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the role of Hausa films in promoting peaceful coexistence in Zango Local Government Area, Katsina State.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  • Hausa Films: Films produced in the Hausa language, reflecting the culture and values of Northern Nigeria.
  • Peaceful Coexistence: The harmonious living of people from diverse backgrounds in the same community.
